PREPARATION

  • In the oven (recommended):
    bake for 13–15 minutes at 220 °C (convection oven: 200 °C). Preferably with 10% steam.
  • Frying:
    You get the best result by frying for 2–4 minutes in vegetable frying fat at 180 °C.
  • In the Airfryer:
    bake for 15 minutes at 180 °C. Don't forget to turn them regularly.

INGREDIENTS & NUTRITIONAL VALUE

By now, you probably noticed that we really like you to know that eating our Vegan Fisherman plant-based fishies is great for all animal fish in the world. But don't overlook the fact that regularly adding our fish substitutes to your plate is equally wonderful for you and your health, too. Here is why:

 

High protein level 

Protein is hugely important for us: it is good for our muscles, bones, skin, and many vital functions. Paying close attention to your protein intake is, therefore, always a smart idea. The high protein level in fish is one of the reasons why eating fish is recommended. But our Vegan Fisherman plant-based fish substitutes, made from NON-GMO rice (i.e. not genetically modified rice), are equally nutrient-rich and get very close to the high protein level of animal fish!

 

Omega 3, 6, and 9

Why the hype around omegas? Well, because our brain benefits greatly from getting our omega fix! And our heart and blood vessels also do well if we ensure a healthy cholesterol level. We can do so by consuming sufficient omega fatty acids or 'omegas', among other things. Our vision and our skin, too, benefit from a generous intake of omega 3, 6 ,and 9. As well as several more important processes in our bodies. So when we developed Vegan Visboer products, we made sure to include those omegas to get them to animal fish levels - and we actually made it better!

 

Similar nutritional values as fish - yet better

Back in the days, when eating animals was still cool, animal fish was always considered to be one of the most important sources of omega 3, 6, and 9 fatty acids. This changed when it became known that omegas actually do not come from the fish, but from what fish eat that makes this food so omega-rich: yup, algae. So, we cultivated the best, cleanest algae to add to our plant-based fish products. Much better for both the fish and for you. One, because, we don't steal food from the fish. But more importantly for your health: our algae are superclean and do not contain metals, microplastics or other nasty things that you would ingest when eating things that come from the sea.

VEGAN FISH CHUNKS ('OR 'KIBBELING' IN DUTCH)

Our vegan fish chunks are made from a hypoallergenic rice grain (NON-GMO): this rice is the ideal basis for vegan fish chunks. The texture feels truly natural and the taste is indistinguishable from the real thing. The fish herb blend, created by fishermen and chefs, gives the plant-based fish chunks the unmistakable smell, color and taste of fish. It is not without reason that Vegan Fisherman Fish Chunks are already being spotted in restaurants, large retail chains, and now also available in your home!

 

WHY DID YOU MAKE VEGAN KIBBELING?

You probably know that feeling: the feeling when you sink your teeth into a freshly fried piece of fish, directly from the hot bath, picking it with your hands? The irresistible and unmistakable crispy layer that your teeth pierce first to get to the soft and white interior of this delicious warm snack?

Yes, we really enjoy fish chunks: I think you got that now. It's definitely a snack we would never want to miss. But at some point we started to notice a bit of a 'fishy' smell when thinking more about eating animal fish due to the animal suffering and the effect on our waters and planet that it is connected to. It was a great push for us to look for a fishy alternative and create plant-based fish chunks. 

 

THE BENEFITS OF VEGAN FISH CHUNKS vs. ANIMAL FISH CHUNKS

Guess what?! It turned out that you don't have to miss the magical experience of eating fish chunks at all if you want to follow a (part-time) vegan diet or if you just want to try something else, something healthier and more sustainable. Vegan fish chunks are better for you and your health, for all fish, and for the planet. And indirectly even for all other people, because fishing causes bycatch and damage to many other fish and animals, such as dolphins, sharks and whales.

Many of these animals filter CO2 from the air - in other words: they keep our air clean so that we can continue to inhale it and live of it. With our Vegan Fish Chunks this is not the case, as it is made from rice and healthy grown algae. This way, you can enjoy vegan fish chunks endlessly and guilt-free.

 

TRADITIONAL DUTCH 'KIBBELING' RECIPE

Just like the animal original, our fishies also make their way through a yummy and old-fashioned batter made of of flour and water. And, as a tasty and indispensable finishing touch - the secret of every fishmonger - our Vegan Fish Chunks are also seasoned with the traditional 'kibbeling' herbs and spices. Lastly, you prepare them in the way you like best. (Tip: we love them in all ways, but we are the biggest fan of preparing them in the oven; the crust is perfect this way!).

 

NO DIFFERENT FROM THE REAL THING

At team Vegan Fisherman, we believe think that our pieces of plant-based fish chunks come seriously close to the animal version. It took us months to create the right structure and recreate that characteristic smell and taste of Dutch 'kibbeling'.

With the help of experienced fishermen and fishmongers, we are convinced that we have succeeded, thanks to the perfect softness, the balanced spice mix, and the batter that behaves exactly as it does in the fish shop. It smells like kibbeling, it tastes like kibbeling, so as far as we're concerned; it's kibbeling! But then in vegan form and thus without any sad fish or empty waters. Win-win-win, we say!
